Kate Silverton has revealed how she underwent therapy to choose between different boyfriends, after she met her now husband Mike Heron. The former Strictly Come Dancing contestant tied the knot with her other half in 2010, five years after the couple met.

The 50-year-old has now made a candid admission about her love life, admitting she continued to date despite knowing Mike was “The One”.

Kate explained that she sought therapy after confessing to being afraid of commitment with a partner.

She met her husband and former Royal Marine Mike during a week long war zone training course back in 2005.

Despite knowing he was the right man for her, the journalist was unsure about a lifelong commitment.

Kate added that her therapist informed her that she was the problem as she continued to date other men.

Speaking on the White Wine Question Time podcast with host Kate Thornton, the mum-of-two admitted she was “thankful” for her husband who allowed her to get dating “out of my system”.

“[After the course] he reached out. It was not for quite some months after but we met again,” Kate explained.

“I think we knew but I was such a commitment-phobe. I did start and stop a few times once we did decide to get together.”

The broadcaster continued: “I actually went to a therapist and said, ‘Look seriously I’ve got these men and I can’t choose between them, I’ve got this problem and I just need help with it please’.

“She said, ‘Look, my dear, the problem is not with them, it is with you’.”

The Strictly star explained that she broke up with Mike after he encouraged her to date other men.

“I’ve been really lucky and have had lovely, lovely boyfriends,” Kate remarked. “But there was always this ‘where’s the one and will I know it’. When I met Mike, I knew [he was the one] and that just scared me.

“How can I trust this feeling? I’m 35 and have met lots of lovely men.”

Kate explained that she didn’t want her relationships with men to overlap and had an honest conversation with Mike.

She said: “I broke up with Mike again and [other men] kept saying to me, ‘Look you’re obviously in love with this guy Mike, what are you doing?’

“And I said, ‘Really? Is it that obvious?'”

Mike urged the broadcaster to “do her own thing” but it wasn’t long before Kate realised who she should be in a relationship with.

Kate concluded: “Then thankfully I understood what it was which had been sending me off all over the place and made that commitment, and we’ve never looked back. He’s my soulmate.

“My therapist, who is now a friend, came to the wedding and said, ‘Everyone says he’s lucky to have you but let me tell you, you are bl**dy lucky to have him’.”

Kate – who is now doing a Masters in child psychotherapy – tied the knot with Mike in 2010 after he proposed in Rome, and now share two children; Wilbur and Clemency.
