Kerry Katona‘s daughter DJ turns 8: ‘I hope her dad feels proud from heaven’

Kerry Katona cannot believe her daughter DJ is going to be turning eight this week – but our columnist says her milestone is "bittersweet" as she thinks about everything she went through with her daughter's father George Kay.

Don't suffer in silence

It was World Bipolar Day last week, and it made me think about what I’ve overcome and the issues I face every day. I want people to see me as a beacon for those who are struggling. It doesn’t matter how low you feel, you have to keep fighting until you’re being heard.

There is light at the end of the tunnel. We need to keep talking about bipolar – be open about it and don’t feel ashamed. For years I was ridiculed and mocked. People didn’t want to work with me because they didn’t understand what bipolar was.

They called me a “car crash”, but it doesn’t define me. You can still have a great life, even when you’re struggling with mental health. Every day is a battle, but looking at who I am and what I’ve achieved gets me through.

If you’re feeling low, see a doctor. Don’t feel embarrassed. No one can explain what’s going on inside your head, but it’s important to realise you’re never alone. Don’t suffer in silence.

Oscars overshadowed

The whole world has been talking about Will Smith and Chris Rock at the Oscars. I adore Will – I feel like he’s been a massive inspiration to me. I’ve met him several times. We were on Jonathan Ross’s show together and he was the loveliest guy.

But I think it’s wrong that he slapped Chris. I don’t condone violence. His Oscar is for his work ethic and talent as an actor but, sadly, it has been overshadowed. I think he could have handled it differently. Although he was supporting his wife, Jada, he could have had a word with Chris later, away from the cameras.

DJ's birthday

DJ turns eight on 4 April – I can’t believe it. All of my kids are growing up so fast. Despite everything I went through with her dad, George, I hope that he’s looking down on DJ from heaven and is feeling proud. I’m extremely proud of her.

Sadly, her iPad was stolen last year, so for her birthday this year, we are giving her a new one. She’s also getting a trampoline. I can’t wait to see her face! She’ll be over the moon. As I’m writing this, we haven’t had birthday celebrations just yet. But I’ll share pictures with you next week.

Honesty is the best policy

Comedian Amy Schumer has admitted she felt guilty having liposuction because it’s a “privilege thing” not everyone can afford, but said she wanted to be honest about getting it done. I agree that honesty is the best policy.

I’ve always been open about the surgery I’ve had. And I make sure I’m honest about it with my children, too. I would rather them know the whole truth. As you all probably know by now, I don’t sugar-coat anything!

Whenever I’ve had something done, my kids have seen the impact – all the bruising and scarring it brings. We’re living in a society where everyone is getting sliced and diced because they want to look like social media stars. I want my kids to see the reality of having surgery.

I’m heartbroken over the news of Tom Parker’s passing. He’s far too young to be taken away. He has such small children – it’s so sad and utterly heartbreaking. My thoughts are with his wife, Kelsey, and his kids, Aurelia and Bodhi. I’m devastated.
