7 best hair treatments and masks for 2022 to repair damage

Sure, we’re probably all aware of the damage that regular hair habits such as brushing, colouring and heat styling can create – but that doesn’t mean we should completely give up these feel-good grooming routines.

While nothing can beat a regular trim and professional treatment in the salon, nowadays there’s a vast array of at-home haircare products claiming to repair strands that are snapping off.

From deep conditioning masks to leave-on creams, these haircare products promise stronger, healthier hair – sometimes with immediate or overnight results.

But do they really work? The OK! beauty team and our Real Beauty panel put them to the test…

Best hair-repairing masks and treatments

Pantene Overnight Beauty Reset 8H Active Serum, currently £9.99 here.

Applied to wet or dry hair before bed, this promises to reverse daily damage while you get your eight hours’ sleep.

Real Beauty tester Yvonne says: “This is a must for anyone looking to repair damage to their hair. I felt confident from the first application that I was giving my hair the VIP treatment it needed. The texture is just right – lightweight and not too runny. I used a coin-sized amount on my thick afro hair, both after washing and on dry hair before bed, and in both instances it absorbed well and didn't leave any residue.

"My hair’s damage is visibly less and it feels much more hydrated and less brittle. My partner also said that my hair had a nice healthy glow to it. I'll definitely be investing in more of this when it runs out!”

MONAT Damage Repair Bond Support Masque, £48 here.

A deeply conditioning mask that softens strands while also instantly bonding damaged hair fibres.

Real Beauty tester Mandy says: “An absolute miracle! I have problematic dry hair that’s prone to breaking due to post-Covid and menopause. This mask worked immediately after one application, and the results kept improving. There were visibly much fewer strands on my brush, and my hair was silkier, softer and less dull. I was even able to tolerate hair bands, which I have not been able to do for some time.

"People asked if I had been taking vitamins or supplements, as they thought my hair was looking in much better condition than it had in months. I now have the confidence to brush my hair. Pricey but worth every penny, and a game changer for weak hair. ”

Toni & Guy Strengthplex Bond Repair Mask, £7.19 here.

Designed for all hair types, this treatment penetrates deep into the hair fibre to moisturise and strengthen from within.

OK! beauty editor Laura says: “I could feel the effects of this as soon as I began rinsing it off – my lengths felt silky smooth and deeply nourished. Once out of the shower, the comb slid through my usually-knotty strands like butter, and my hair was much more manageable when blow-drying. I’ve only knocked a star off because of the minor fiddliness of unscrewing a tub in the shower.”

INNOluxe Elixir V3, £27.50 here.

An at-home version of the strengthening INNOluxe salon treatment, designed to build hair bonds, improve shine and manageability, and offer heat protection.

OK! deputy beauty editor Zoe says: “As someone with bleach-damaged and breakage-prone lengths, I can firmly say that this works. After just a few uses my hair felt so much less brittle, and I noticed less hair coming out when I blow-dried. I was worried that a leave-in formula might weigh down my fine hair, but it didn’t at all.”

Boots Ingredients Repair Mask With Niacinamide, £4.50 here.

Part of this new Boots’ own haircare brand, this contains niacinamide and plant protein to restore dry, damaged hair.

Real Beauty tester Georgie says: “This has a fabulous smell – really fresh – and it feels really high quality. It left my hair full of volume and shine and in far better condition, but without feeling greasy at all. Really good product!”

Alterna My Hair My Canvas Cool Hydrations Nourishing Masque, currently £31.10 here.

Enriched with “vegan botanical caviar” and water lily extract to give your hair a boost of hydration and smooth strands.

Real Beauty tester Catherine says: “I immediately noticed how smooth and silky my dry hair felt after the first use – the brush goes straight through it, and it stays smooth and less frizzy until my next wash. I really like this product and would recommend it to anyone in need of a really good home hair treatment mask.”

Pureology Strength Cure Best Blonde Miracle Filler, £19.99 here.

A daily hair treatment for blondes, this helps heal damaged cuticles, protect against heat damage and keep highlights looking bright.

Real Beauty tester Justyna says: “This smells amazing! My hair is easier to style and OMG my hair looks more blonde, the colour looks richer and healthier. My cousin asked me what I’d done to get my hair colour looking so rich! I love how my hair looks after using this spray.”
