Sophie Countess of Wessex and Prince Edward were interviewed by Camilla Tominey for The Telegraph this weekend. Then, royal write Omid Scobie, co-author of Finding Freedom – a book written with the contribution of Meghan Markle through a third-party source – highlighted one particular quote.

He tweeted: “‘You know, if you’re not into chat shows, there’s no reason why you should know who she is. Certainly not in this country, anyway,’ Sophie, Countess of Wessex says of Oprah in a new interview given to The Telegraph.”

The quote gave some cause to criticise the pair, accusing the Countess in particular of a “disconnect”.

One wrote: “Spoken like a true 19th century Countess. The level of disconnect is staggering and provided deep insight into the privilege and arrogant culture of a royal who nobody knows as opposed to Oprah a self-made, global superstar.”

Another said: “This is a shockingly disrespectful statement by Sophie, Countess of Wessex and surprising considering she visited the Oprah Winfrey Leadership Academy for Girls in Johannesburg in 2013.”

The quote was taken from a paragraph in the Telegraph interview in which Sophie, Countess of Wessex was defending the Archbishop of Canterbury who, according to Tominey, had not known who Oprah Winfrey was at Prince Harry’s wedding.

Since the interview, a number of royal fans have thrown their support behind the Countess.

One wrote: “Sophie The Countess of Wessex (Prince Edward’s wife) was defending The Archbishop for not knowing Oprah.

“She was not “shading” or “coming for” Oprah. Context matters.”

One complimented her sense of humour. They wrote, “And the droll humour she and Edward share, re: ‘Oprah who?’ and ‘what interview?'” followed by a heart emoji.

Others were full of general praise for the royal.

One wrote: “Appreciation for this beautiful gem in the #RoyalFamily Sophie Countess of Wessex is a true Royal she gets on with it and I hope they highlight more of her work!”

Another said: “Like Prince Edward, the Countess of Wessex does her job quietly and dutifully.”

“She’s very underrated, just gets on with the job quietly and effectively without any fuss or drama. A credit to the UK, Commonwealth & Monarchy, we’re very lucky to have her & Edward,” one wrote.

Another said: “She is such an asset. Seems like a lovely person and the Queen has a soft spot for her too…and Kate.”

The latest royal drama comes as Harry and Meghan’s pictures are moved down the royal website.

Whereas before the pictures of the Duke and Duchess of Sussex were below Kate and William, now they are below Prince Edward and Sophie Wessex and the Princess Royal, Princess Anne, and the Duke of York, Prince Andrew, on the official site.

Sophie Wessex and the Queen are said to have been close for a number of years.

It was claimed she was at the Queen’s side amid Prince Philip’s passing in April.

She was praised at the time, while she told the press of his death: “It was so gentle, it was just like someone took him by the hand and off he went.

“Very, very peaceful – and that’s all you want with somebody isn’t it?”
