Man thanks his huge belly for ‘saving his life’ after he falls down pub steps
A granddad who tumbled down some stairs in a pub was told by doctors he would've died if not for his big belly.
Colin Hayes fell down the 15 steps to the Wetherspoon boozer's toilets – where another man had fallen and died last week – and suffered a bleed on the brain.
Weighing 19st at the time, the 61-year-old said medical staff informed him his stomach cushioned the impact of his fall.
He said that if he had been a more slender man his accident at the Christopher Creeke Wetherspoon pub in Bournemouth could have seen him land on his head.

Mr Hayes told The Sun : “After I came round in hospital the doctors told me that had I been slimmer I would probably be dead.
"It was my stomach that got in the way and stopped me falling straight on my head.”
He then spent four days in hospital after the incident in August and has since gone on to lose an impressive 2st as he looks to lead a healthier lifestye.
“My weight probably saved my life,” he added.
In the past eight months two other men have tumbled down the same steps at the pub in the Holdenhurst Road in the last eight months, with one in his 40s going into cardiac arrest last Sunday before dying hospital.
The man, who has not been named, was from Bradford, reports the Bournemouth Echo and was taken to Poole Hospital after the fall at 1.42am on February 23.
However, Wetherspoon is adamant there is no issue with the pubs steps following an investigation and does not believe pubgoers are at risk.
A spokesman for JD Wetherspoon told the Sun that health and safety checks after the latest incident found no defects.
He insisted: “There was no risk to the public.”
Wetherspoon spokesman Eddie Gershon told the Echo after the Bradford man's death: “ We can confirm that a male customer appears to have fallen down the stairs at the pub.
“The manager on duty tried to resuscitate him.
“We will assist the police in any way possible.
“We extend our sympathies to the family and friends of the man.”
