Coronation Street pays emotional tribute to Vera Lynn after her death

Coronation Street paid tribute to Forces Sweetheart Dame Vera Lynn in an episode that was due to air on VE Day.

With production on the ITV soap having halted amid the COVID-19 pandemic earlier this year, episodes which were completed prior to the shutdown were rationed out in an effort to ensure it remained on air for as long as possible.

As a result, the timeline of the show inevitably went out of sync with that of the real world, meaning that events such as Easter arrived much later in the soap than they did in reality.

Tonight’s instalment was due to air on VE Day, and therefore several of the soap’s older characters gathered in the pub to celebrate the event.

As Rita Tanner (Barbara Knox) headed to the bar to order another round, Norris Cole (Malcolm Hebden) joked that after another vodka and tonic, the legend would start serenading the greatest hits of Vera Lynn.

The episode concluded much like Norris had predicted, as David Platt (Jack P Shepherd) and Shona Ramsey (Julia Goulding) passed the pub on their way to the chippie, and all of the residents could be heard singing Dame Vera’s classic ‘We’ll Meet Again.’

The Forces Sweetheart passed away last week at the age of 103.

A statement read: ‘The family are deeply saddened to announce the passing of one of Britain’s best-loved entertainers at the age of 103.

‘Dame Vera Lynn, who lived in Ditchling, East Sussex, passed away earlier today, 18 June 2020, surrounded by her close family.’

Coronation Street continues Friday 26 June at 7:30pm on ITV.
