Queen of the South returned to Netflix last week with the fourth season of the USA Network crime series. Following its dramatic fourth season coming to an end, here’s everything fans need to know about what happened and what it means for season five.

What happened at the end of Queen of the South season 4?

Season four of Queen of the South saw Teresa Mendoza (played by Alice Braga) heading to New Orleans to build up her influence.

However, by the time the finale rolled around, it seemed there was no going back for Teresa as she became the undisputed head of the drug cartel.

The finale opened as Teresa reorganised her cartel after taking over El Gordo’s operations.

She then made an arrangement to form an alliance with a Russian drug boss in order to consolidate her power.

While not everyone agreed with her decision, the finale really cemented how she was the one in charge now.

Looking forward to season five, co-showrunner Ben Lobato told Entertainment Weekly: “This is the season Teresa discovers that there’s no getting out.

“It’s now impossible for her to hold on to her moral code while running a drug cartel.”

However, the finale episode was not without its victims as Javier Jimenez (Alfonso Herrera) was killed off.

Viewers will remember how Judge Lafayette (David Andrews) kidnapped Oksana Volkova (Vera Cherny) before asking for Javier in exchange.

In his final moments, the Judge rallied the other characters around to watch him kill Javier.

Although Javier refused to go out without a fight despite being beaten up and covered in gasoline.

Just before the flames consumed him, he grabbed Randall Green (Cory Hart) and the pair went up in flames together.

The biggest cliffhanger moment, however, saw James (Peter Gadiot) return.

At the very end of the episode, the gang was at the warehouse when a car came speeding up before James got out.

Suffering from a bleeding abdomen, he warned them someone is coming for them, setting up a dramatic season five.

Speaking about bringing him back, Loboto added he will play a big role in the upcoming season five.

“We’re so grateful that it did and we’re so happy to have him back.”

Viewers will have to wait until season five to find out who is threatening them and what will happen next.
