Question of Sport return to BBC One earlier this month with a new-look set, all-new presenting team and one or two shake-ups to the show’s format. For years, Sue Barker and team captains Matt Dawson and Phil Tufnell had been keeping fans entertained but now, Paddy McGuinness and new competing skippers Sam Quek and Ugo Monye have taken the reins. However, many of the changes have resulted in a backlash from parts of the fandom – particularly over the new stipulation that competitors don’t need to be sportsmen or women.

The first case of this happening was when Strictly Come Dancing’s Anton du Beke joined Sam’s team last Friday.

Despite not being an athlete, the pro dancer admitted his love for all things sport – especially golf – and left Paddy and Ugo blown away with his sporting knowledge.

The next episode on Friday, September 24 will also put a non-athlete in the firing as boxing promoter Eddie Hearn will be showing off his knowledge.

Speaking on The One Show alongside Ugo and Sam at the beginning of September ahead of the series launch, Paddy revealed the change to the show’s typical format.

Discussing the vibe on the set, he told The One Show viewers: “Do you know what? It’s been really lovely.

“I’ve not had to stop many arguments at the minute,” he added as Ugo let out a chuckle.

Paddy continued: “They are both very competitive I would say that, but it’s kind of just flowed really well and been a really nice vibe.

“And obviously this series as well, on the odd show we have non-sporting people.

“So we’ll have people who are passionate about sports but they’re not known for sports.”

Paddy then went on to refer to Anton’s stint on the show which aired last week, praising the Strictly star for taking part.

“We had Anton du Beke on recently from Strictly, obviously Ugo’s doing his training at the minute, and his knowledge of sport was second to none,” Paddy said. “He was unbelievable that fella.

“So I think people will be surprised by the non-sporting people as well when they come on.”

Despite the fact the new series would include celebrities rather than solely sportspeople was confirmed prior to its premiere, it didn’t stop fans from expressing their dismay when Anton appeared on the show recently.

Steven said on Twitter: “Anton Du Beke on A Question of Sport? The game’s gone.”

“Unsure as to exactly why Anton Du Beke was a panelist on A Question of Sport, but his sporting knowledge was astounding,” @FAC321 said, while Charles questioned: “Sorry but what the f**k is Anton de Beck doing on question of sport ?”

Jason also queried: “What’s Anton Du Beke doing on a question of sport?!”

Phil blasted: “Somebody please tell me how that geezer Anton something from Strictly is allowed to be on Question of Sport?!!!”

And Paddy argued: “Jeez, flicking through the channels and Anton Du Beke on Question of Sport ????? Really ??? Programme should be put out of it’s misery and axed. #questionofsport.”

Matt hit back, however: “People criticising Anton Du Beke on Question of Sport for not being a sportsman?

“He plays off a 2 handicap. He’s better at golf than those complaining about him are at any sport, plus he’d wipe the floor with you on the questions as well.”

Question of Sport airs Fridays at 8:30pm on BBC One.
