WARNING: This article contains spoilers for The Alienist season 2.

Victorian crime thriller The Alienist has now returned with its second season entitled Angel of Darkness.

Back again are Daniel Brühl as Dr Laszlo Kreizler, Luke Evans as John Moore and Dakota Fanning as Sara Howard.

The show sees the trio back investigating a new spate of murders as it appears there is a killer on the loose.

Across the eight episodes, the mystery of one kidnapped child in 1897 soon spiralled into more.

The tension grew before the series culminated with a dramatic final episode for all of the characters.

By the finale, viewers knew who was behind the series of baby kidnappings sweeping New York.

The culprit was the former Elsbeth Hunter who was now known as Libby Hatch (Rosy McEwen).

She had been confined to an asylum for many years for the attempted murder of her mother.

It was revealed how she had become obsessed with babies after she had been deemed ‘unfit’ for motherhood.

Her mother had given Libby’s daughter away, which is why she had tried to kill her.

Ahead of the finale, the team then used Libby’s estranged daughter Clara (Brooke Carter) to draw her out, which led her to them.

As the finale began, Libby was holding a knife to Moore’s throat, which she only loosened when Clara’s whereabouts was revealed.

When she loosened her grip, Moore was able to overpower her and have her arrested.

In prison, Libby was then tortured before Sara tricked the woman into revealing where the Vanderbilt baby was.

However, while they went to find the child, Libby was sprung free with GooGoo Knox (Frederick Schmidt) and his gang.

They then headed to where Clara was being kept, kidnapping her as well.

This all led to a dramatic shootout where Laszlo, Moore and Sara were left to try and negotiate with Libby

This worked, leading to success for the whole team with Sara praised for her skills and Moore promoted at the New York Times.

There were some other big revelations in the finale, including how Moore’s fling with Violet Hayward (Emily Barber) had left her pregnant.

As well as this, Laszlo was invited to Vienna with Karen Stratton (Lara Pulver) and set off on a two-year sabbatical there.

This means there is plenty to be resolved in a potential third season of the hit drama.

Nothing has been confirmed about this so far by TNT but fans will be undoubtedly hoping it returns.
