The Last Kingdom season five was revealed to be the final instalment in the historical drama, which has been airing on Netflix. The series, based on The Saxon Stories by Bernard Cornwell, will continue to follow Uhtred (played by Alexander Dreymon) as he makes one final attempt to claim back Bebbanburg. Fans are keen to know when the fifth season will air as filming has now finished.
Will The Last Kingdom season 5 air in 2021?
The Last Kingdom made its debut back in 2015 and the historical drama has continued to build a loyal fanbase ever since.
Sadly in April 2021, it was announced that season five would be the final season of the series, which is based on a collection of 13 books.
Fans were heartbroken to hear the series would be coming to an end so soon, and they even launched a petition to save the show.
An update has been announced regarding the fifth season, as filming in Budapest, Hungary, has officially come to an end.
Jon East, who directed the final two episodes of season five, shared an update on Instagram explaining the current situation.
He said: “It’s most definitely a wrap! As of last night (June 21) TLK5 is in the (digital) can. Phew!
“That last block – eps 9&10 – was an absolute monster, a BEAST, which eclipsed in complexity and scale anything else that I’ve directed on this amazing show since I first helmed episodes back in 2016.
“If nothing else, I can at least reveal that the show’s last season is going out in truly EPIC style!
“Big thanks here to the remarkable team that worked with tireless devotion to make it so, you are all stars! Respect.”
With this in mind, season five is expected to be the most action-packed yet, as fans are keen to see the show go out with a bang.
No release date has been given yet, but fans are worried the final season will not be ready in time for this year.
East’s post was shared on Reddit, and one fan said: “Post production usually takes about 6 months, so probably not until early next year. No official date has been announced yet.”
Another said: “Aww this makes me so happy and sad at the same time. I wish it could go on forever, this show means so much to me.” [Sic]
From what has been said, the final season may not air on Netflix until early 2022, depending on how long post-production takes.
The series is renowned for its attention to detail, and there are some epic battle scenes that require a lot of work. So there is a chance season five will emerge next year rather than 2021.
There was almost an 18-month gap between seasons three and four, so the same may be said for the upcoming season.
If this is the case, season five may not appear until October 2021 at the earliest. A winter release date is not uncommon for the series.
In another Reddit post, one fan said of the potential release date: “Probably November/December 2021 at the earliest but that’s very doubtful, probably Spring 22.”
Another added: “TLK is the equivalent of one 10-hour feature film, location shooting for several months, and a 18-month production cycle.
“All of Europe has Covid-19 getting ready to explode. This is not the flu or a cold, and this generation is going to see a winter never seen before. Winter comes. Don’t expect Witcher or TLK until spring 2022.”
As this is the final season, fans are expecting the characters’ storylines to be wrapped up in line with the books.
Uhtred will hopefully claim back his homeland and see young Aethelstan (Harry Gilby) rule over a united England.
Viewers have taken to Twitter to discuss the highly-anticipated final season, with one saying: “Now convince Netflix to renew for Season 6! We still got 3 more novels to finish! We can’t let The Last Kingdom die on Book 10 out of 13!”
Another said: “Sure it will be wonderful but don’t leave the last 3 books untouched by the magic of this cast and production team, finish the story and give us S6.”
A third added: “I cannot wait for the release of #TLK5! I also really don’t want this to be the last season!”
