Sharon Osbourne was ‘set up to fail’ by CBS bigwigs over her defense of Piers Morgan and was forced to take part in a debate, despite asking to be allowed to clear the air with a monologue, DailyMail.com can reveal.
The debate, which aired on last Wednesday’s episode of The Talk, left Osbourne, 68, facing racism claims and a backlash over her comments.
On Friday, the British host had to issue an apology over her defense of Morgan who quit Good Morning Britain last week following a row over whether Meghan Markle was telling the truth during her explosive interview with Oprah Winfrey.
Now insiders have told DailyMail.com they believe Osbourne was ‘set up to fail’ by CBS bigwigs on a cost-cutting drive and said the TV veteran has also been targeted because of jealousy over her salary.
A source with close links to the show said: ‘1000 per cent they set her up to fail. Sharon’s been doing this so long that she doesn’t really think about what the grand scheme is.
‘I think this is an exercise that has been set up to trim the fat, to change the show around, get people out of their contracts and basically save money.’

‘No one else on The Talk makes anywhere near what Sharon makes and that makes her enemy number one.
Morgan had praised Osbourne for tweeting her support for him. Following her u-turn, he slammed what he described as ‘bullies’ on The Talk for ‘shaming’ her into apologizing
‘A lot of the on-set discourse is rooted in jealousy.’
Osbourne is at the center of a race row after defending longtime friend Morgan during a heated on-air discussion with co-host Sheryl Underwood, 57, last week.
Morgan was ousted by British breakfast TV show Good Morning Britain after saying he didn’t believe a word Markle said during her Oprah special.
It later emerged that the Duchess of Sussex had personally complained to ITV about Morgan’s comments.
Osbourne tweeted in support of Morgan shortly after his departure was announced, saying: ‘I am with you. I stand by you.
‘People forget that you’re paid for your opinion and that you’re just speaking your truth.’
The following day, Osbourne asked producers if she could do a monologue to clear the air after being subjected to a backlash but bosses insisted she take part in a debate instead.
A source told DailyMail.com: ‘Sharon should have quit while she was ahead. She should have let her comments sit on Tuesday’s show and not tweeted on top of it. That set people off.’
The insider added: ‘All she wanted to do was to clear the air the following day but producers wanted a conversation. Well, they got one all right – and it was more than they bargained for.’
Osbourne has since said she was ‘blindsided’ by Underwood and CBS and horrified to be called a racist for her defense of Morgan.

After she faced a backlash and accusations of racism following Wednesday’s show, Osbourne issued a statement (above) Friday apologizing ‘to anyone of colour that I offended and/or to anyone that feels confused or let down’
Piers Morgan expressed his disappointment after Osbourne apologized
The show has now been put on hiatus until tomorrow while bosses investigate the clash. Sources close to Osbourne say she is the one who requested it.
Insiders also criticized CBS’ decision to make Osbourne publicly apologize for her defense of Morgan – an old friend and former colleague.
One told DailyMail.com: ‘Look, Piers rubs some people up the wrong way. Being opinionated is what he is about. But to say he’s racist for calling Meghan Markle out? C’mon.
‘She rubs a lot of people up the wrong way. And then to imply Sharon is a racist for trying to defend him?
‘She probably should have stood her ground and not apologized. Apologize for what?’
A second insider with knowledge of the situation blamed bosses’ insistence that she apologize on CBS’s desperation to avoid anything controversial in the wake of the Les Moonves scandal.
Former boss Moonves, 71, was forced out of the network in 2017 after multiple sex harassment claims were made against him.
The source said: ‘That show’s always been a war. It’s always been a war in there.
‘Now the bosses have basically pulled Sharon aside and said, you’ve got to go on a campaign to fix what you said.
‘At CBS, you cannot be controversial. They do not want anything that’s going to raise red flags.
‘It’s really tricky right now. They’re trying to make sure that anything related to racism, Black Lives Matter and anything related to the old Les Moonves order – they have to make sure absolutely everything is above board because all eyes are on them.’
Holly Robinson Peete, who co-hosted the first season of The Talk in 2010, claimed Osbourne got her fired, tweeting: ‘I’m old enough to remember when Sharon complained that I was too ‘ghetto’ for #theTalk … then I was gone’
The TV star and wife of rocker Ozzy Osbourne, 68, shared an email from her former colleague over the weekend, which she argues ‘speaks for itself’ on the issue
Osbourne is now also facing claims from former co-host Holly Robinson Peete, 56, that she got her fired because she was ‘too ghetto’ for Osbourne.
Osbourne has strongly denied the allegations and posted a screenshot of an email sent by Robinson Peete on Twitter that suggests her firing was due to former host Julie Chen – who is married to ex boss Moonves – instead.
News of The Talk’s brief suspension has sparked outrage, with Morgan tweeting: ‘So @CBS has yanked The Talk off air while it investigates the ‘scandal’ of @MrsSOsbourne defending me when @sherylunderwood said I was ‘racist’ for disbelieving Meghan Markle.
‘The REAL scandal is me being branded a racist for refusing to believe a liar.’
Donald Trump Jr then piled in, tweeting in response to Morgan: ‘This is getting insane! ‘Now other shows are being pulled off the air because someone who actually knows someone else doesn’t believe they’re racist simply because someone else accused them of it with no basis simply because he didn’t believe someone else.
Insiders told DailyMail.com that Osbourne’s future at CBS is hanging in the balance and said she should have thought twice about her defense of Morgan because she is ‘the perfect target to be canceled’.
The source said: ‘Sharon is not a racist. Sharon just puts her foot in her mouth. Look at the way the world is today.
‘If you want to touch something edgy, this is not the space to do it – especially after the win they had in the ratings [with the Oprah interview].
‘Sharon should know better than to speak about this [race] because she’s the perfect target to be canceled – she’s white, she’s rich, she’s English.’
