Trump tweets that Supreme Court nominee to be announced Saturday
President Trump on Tuesday said he will announce Saturday his selection to replace Ruth Bader Ginsburg on the Supreme Court.
“I will be announcing my Supreme Court Nominee on Saturday, at the White House! Exact time TBA,” Trump tweeted.
Trump said Monday he’s considering five women to replace the liberal icon, including federal judges Amy Coney Barrett and Barbara Lagoa.
Trump said he may meet with Lagoa during a trip to Miami on Friday.
Lagoa, a judge on the US Court of Appeals for the 11th Circuit, is a Cuban-American former justice on the Florida Supreme Court.
Trump met with Barrett, a judge on the Seventh Circuit, on Monday, Fox News reported.
Barrett is a favorite among religious conservatives and was reportedly considered at the time Brett Kavanaugh’s name was put forth for the high court.
Trump said he was considering five women for the seat, but that “there are one or two that I have in mind” as favorites. He mentioned only Lagoa, 52, and Barrett, 48, by name.
Ginsburg died Friday, giving an unexpected opportunity to shift the ideological balance of the court just over a month before the presidential election. Democrats are furiously attempting to convince enough Republican senators to stall until after the election.
So far just two Republicans — Sens. Susan Collins of Maine and Lisa Murkowski of Alaska — said they want to delay a vote until after the election. Republicans hold 53 seats and at least 50 senators must vote for the nominee.
