For many years, during the height of the winter, the main route into Zanskar was via the 40-mile (64km) Chadar route, which takes trekkers over the frozen Zanskar River. A dangerous passage, those who tackle the trek are at risk of avalanches, blizzards or falling through the ice into the freezing waters of the river.<\/p>\n<p>Travelling by road is generally not an option due to heavy snowfall and the risk of avalanches, even though in the past few years, work has been done to improve the quality of the region&#8217;s roads and a snow clearance programme has been introduced by the Border Roads Organisation. One way of bypassing the danger altogether is by travelling via the new helicopter service that was launched last year, ferrying travellers from the Ladakh city of Leh to Zanskar Valley in just 45 minutes.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Newey, 44, journeyed to Zanskar last winter, turning his camera on the landscapes and inhabitants of the uber-isolated region, which covers 7,000 sq km (2,700 sq miles) and is home to a few dozen villages. The results are spellbinding, showing Buddhist monks playing on a frozen river, an ancient monastery hewn into a rock face and the vast expanse of the valley in all its snow-dusted glory.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Newey, who has been a professional photographer for nearly two decades, explains: \u2018Accessing the Zanskar Valley in winter is extremely difficult. Padum,\u00a0Zanskar&#8217;s main town, can be seen in the distance<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/i.dailymail.co.uk\/1s\/2023\/09\/06\/14\/74477929-12421571-Karsha_monastery_bathed_in_golden_light_as_the_sun_sets_on_a_bea-a-96_1694006459460.jpg\" height=\"641\" width=\"960\"><\/p>\n<p>This spellbinding shot by Newey shows the Karsha Monastery bathed in golden light as the sun sets on a winter\u2019s day<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/i.dailymail.co.uk\/1s\/2023\/09\/06\/13\/75120127-12421571-image-a-90_1694004622838.jpg\" height=\"921\" width=\"962\"><\/p>\n<p>Zanskar is one of the world\u2019s most hard-to-reach inhabited regions in the depths of wintertime\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>He arrived there via the new helicopter service, noting: \u2018One of the main challenges was waiting for a window of opportunity to fly, as the helicopter can only fly on mornings when there are no clouds in the sky and visibility is perfect.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>The view from the chopper\u2019s windows was \u2018really quite breathtaking\u2019, showing Newey the \u2018mighty mountains of the Zanskar Range\u2019.\u00a0It was these mountainscapes that inspired Newey&#8217;s visit &#8211; he felt they\u2019d make for \u2018incredibly atmospheric\u2019 images.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Newey \u2013 who is based in Dorset but travels the world as a photographer &#8211; was also attracted to the challenge of exploring this hard-to-reach reaction. \u2018Photographically speaking, I do like a challenge,\u2019 he admits.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/i.dailymail.co.uk\/1s\/2023\/09\/06\/14\/74477907-12421571-Buddhism_plays_a_very_important_part_of_daily_life_in_the_Zanska-a-97_1694006462180.jpg\" height=\"645\" width=\"961\"><\/p>\n<p>&#8216;Buddhism plays a very important part of daily life in the Zanskar Valley,&#8217; says Newey. He says that the locals combine prayers with their daily chores. As in all remote parts of the world I\u2019ve visited, the people [there] seem to be perfectly content with the little they have.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>Newey received a warm welcome from locals. He says: \u2018The Zanskari people are incredibly friendly and on the whole are happy to have their photo taken. Some of the elders are however a little camera-shy at first, but after living with them for a few days they soon begin to warm to the idea.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>However, the extreme weather conditions took some adjusting to. Newey says: \u2018The conditions there in wintertime are truly brutal, especially when there is a strong wind. Very, very few tourists bother to make it there in the wintertime, so all the hotels and guest houses close, transport becomes very scarce and people just hunker down until the spring.&#8217;\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/i.dailymail.co.uk\/1s\/2023\/09\/06\/14\/74477925-12421571-The_monks_have_an_early_start_every_morning_when_in_middle_of_wi-a-100_1694006469022.jpg\" height=\"645\" width=\"961\"><\/p>\n<p>The monks have an early start every morning, Newey reveals. &#8216;The Zanskari people are incredibly hardy people, and living in such an extreme environment, have to be able to adapt to changes in conditions,&#8217; he says\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/i.dailymail.co.uk\/1s\/2023\/09\/06\/14\/74477905-12421571-Built_in_the_shape_of_a_fortress_and_perched_on_a_rocky_outcrop_-a-102_1694006473346.jpg\" height=\"645\" width=\"961\"><\/p>\n<p>This beautiful shot by Newey shows the region&#8217;s Bardan Monastery, which is perched on a rocky outcrop in Zanskar&#8217;s Lugnak Valley\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Newey notes that, during his visit, the average temperatures during the day were around minus 10 degrees Celsius (14 Fahrenheit), plummeting to around minus 20 degrees Celsius (minus four Fahrenheit) to minus 25 (minus 13 Fahrenheit) at night.<\/p>\n<p>He says: \u2018The locals are used to the cold and simply use blankets to keep warm during the bitterly cold nights. Most people have a small wood-burning stove to cook on and heat their houses.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>Newey continues: \u2018The Zanskari people are incredibly hardy people, and living in such an extreme environment, have to be able to adapt to changes in conditions. I feel only time will tell as to how they adapt to the relatively recent climate change in their region.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>Elaborating on the environmental issues the region has faced, Newey says: \u2018Climate change is having a dramatic effect on the region &#8211; temperatures are increasing and causing rapid melting of glaciers, which in turn leads to flooding and little irrigation water. Newey says: \u2018The river ice is not forming properly resulting in the &#8220;ice roads&#8221; becoming more dangerous for walking and transporting vital supplies when heavy snowfall closes all the roads.&#8217;<\/p>\n<p>He adds that &#8216;snowfall is increasing and becoming more erratic which means livestock and other animals struggle to find food&#8217;.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Religion is a source of solace for locals. Buddhism plays a very important part of daily life in the Zanskar Valley, Newey notes, and a highlight of his time in the region was his visit to the Phugtal Monastery, a spectacular Buddhist monastery that was built around a cave in south-eastern Zanskar more than 2,500 years ago.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>To reach the monastery, which sits at an altitude of 14,000ft (4,267m), he trekked along the frozen Lungnak river &#8211; which was \u2018perfectly flat, although extremely slippery\u2019.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The monastery is home to around 30 to 40 monks during wintertime, Newey notes, compared to around 80 in the warmer months. He says that from a distance, the monastery looked &#8216;like a giant honeycomb clinging to the sheer cliff face&#8217;. Newey adds: &#8216;In the late afternoon light as a snowstorm was approaching, [this view] was really quite magical.&#8217;<\/p>\n<p>One of his pictures of the monastery shows a monk preparing noodles in the ancient monastery kitchen, while another shows monks ferrying &#8216;vital supplies&#8217; to the monastery, pulling the goods on wooden sledges over a frozen river.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Summing up the region&#8217;s allure, Newey says: \u2018It\u2019s the remoteness, staggering beauty of the snow-capped mountains, the generosity and hospitality of the people that make the Zanskar so special and magical.\u2019\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Now that this remote pocket of the world is becoming easier to reach, what effect will increased tourism have on Zanskar? Newey says: \u2018As with many places around the world, tourism is very much a double-edged sword.
