Wild falcons can solve complex puzzles within minutes &#8211; and are &#8216;just as capable as parrots&#8217;<\/h1>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Wild falcons are often thought of as dim, but new study shows this isn&#8217;t the case\u00a0<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Birds were able to solve eight food challenges just as well as parrots\u00a0<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>They&#8217;re often thought of as dim creatures, but new footage shows that wild falcons aren&#8217;t so bird-brained after all.<\/p>\n<p>Researchers from the Messerli Research Institute tested the birds&#8217; problem-solving skills through eight different food challenges.<\/p>\n<p>To their surprise, they found that the birds quickly learned to solve the puzzles \u2013 and did them faster each time they tried.<\/p>\n<p>According to the experts, this suggests that wild falcons are &#8216;just as capable as parrots&#8217;.<\/p>\n<p>&#8216;They were ace! We were really blown away by how quickly they set to the tasks and solved them. This is unlike anything we&#8217;ve seen before in wild birds of prey,&#8217; said Katie Harrington, lead author of the study.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/i.dailymail.co.uk\/1s\/2023\/11\/20\/10\/78015505-12770259-image-a-19_1700477923426.jpg\" height=\"326\" width=\"634\"><\/p>\n<p>They&#8217;re often thought of as dim creatures, but new footage shows that wild falcons aren&#8217;t so bird-brained after all<\/p>\n<h3>READ MORE:\u00a0How does YOUR cat stack up? Experts reveal the most intelligent breeds<\/h3>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/i.dailymail.co.uk\/1s\/2023\/11\/20\/15\/66493445-12770259-image-a-12_1700495919726.jpg\" height=\"166\" width=\"274\"><\/p>\n<p>For their study, the researchers visited the Falkland Islands to study striated caracaras \u2013 birds of prey known for their unique habit of searching for, and exploring new things.<\/p>\n<p>&#8216;Striated caracaras have to be really exploratory, constantly examining new situations in their environment to find out what works for them,&#8217; Ms Harrington said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8216;Is this food? What can I do with this?<\/p>\n<p>&#8216;It takes a certain creative bravery to make life work on the Falklands.&#8217;<\/p>\n<p>While striated caracaras are in the falcon family, they behave more like parrots and ravens.<\/p>\n<p>And the researchers wanted to find out how these wild birds would react when faced with puzzles.<\/p>\n<p>A transparent plastic puzzle box was placed on the grass, with passing birds able to try their hand at solving them.<\/p>\n<p>Each bird only had one chance to play per day, which allowed the researchers to see how they improved with each attempt.<\/p>\n<p>&#8216;The caracaras were so eager to solve the puzzles that some even started running toward the box as soon as we set it on the ground,&#8217; Ms Harrington said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8216;They&#8217;d then energetically kick and pull at different functional parts the same way we would grab something to learn how it works.<\/p>\n<p>&#8216;They&#8217;d also move to look at the box from different angles, crouching down to look from below or jumping on top to look from above.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/i.dailymail.co.uk\/1s\/2023\/11\/20\/15\/78015507-12770259-A_transparent_plastic_puzzle_box_was_placed_on_the_grass_with_pa-a-13_1700495919731.jpg\" height=\"481\" width=\"634\"><\/p>\n<p>A transparent plastic puzzle box was placed on the grass, with passing birds able to try their hand at solving them<\/p>\n<p>&#8216;And the more they explored the puzzles, the better they got at them.&#8217;<\/p>\n<p>By comparing similar experiments with other birds, the researchers found that caracaras were just as capable as parrots.<\/p>\n<p>In fact, the caracaras were even better at some tasks, according to Megan Lambert, senior author of the study.<\/p>\n<p>&#8216;Much of what we know about avian intelligence comes from parrots and corvids,&#8217; she explained.<\/p>\n<p>&#8216;These caracaras face a lot of the same pressures and offer a really great opportunity to study cognition in the wild.&#8217;<\/p>\n<p>The researchers hope the findings will help to unravel the mystery of how problem-solving abilities evolved in birds.<\/p>\n<h3>WHY DO BIRDS SING?<\/h3>\n<p>Birds use their voices to communicate with other birds.<\/p>\n<p>Sharp tunes are an efficient way to communicate over long distance, especially when you are small and live in dense habitats like rain forests.<\/p>\n<p>Most bird species use specific calls to identify themselves and to communicate a nearby threat.<\/p>\n<p>Birdsong is a specialised type of call used by many species to help them mate.<\/p>\n<p>Almost exclusively a male activity, birdsong helps the singer to indicate he is fit, healthy and ready to breed.<\/p>\n<p>Source: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailymail.co.uk\/sciencetech\/article-12770259\/Not-bird-brained-Wild-falcons-solve-complex-puzzles-minutes-just-capable-parrots.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Read Full Article<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Not so bird-brained after all!
