But scientists say that some dogs, like Basket (pictured), are &#8216;even more special&#8217;, thanks to their talent for learning toy names<\/p>\n<h3>The key characteristics of gifted dogs\u00a0<\/h3>\n<p><span>Demographics<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Obtained from a breeder<\/li>\n<li>Live with their owner from the age of 10 weeks or younger<\/li>\n<li>Living in a single-dog household<\/li>\n<li>Live with two adult caretakers<\/li>\n<li>Neutered or spayed<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span>Owner experience\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Owners are not professional dog trainers<\/li>\n<li>Owners did not own a gifted dog in the past<\/li>\n<li>Owners owned at least one dog in the past\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span>Learning process\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Dogs learned the object labels by interacting in play sessions with their owners<\/li>\n<li>Owners did not intentionally teach their dogs the toy names<\/li>\n<li>Dogs require less than 30 minutes to learn a toy name<\/li>\n<li>Dogs know at least 15 toy names<\/li>\n<li>Dogs can learn over 50 toy names in two years<\/li>\n<li>Owners play with their dogs with toys daily\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Previous studies have shown\u00a0that certain dogs can learn new words after hearing them only four times, putting them on same level as a two-year-old child.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>In particular, Border Collies are known to be one of the most &#8216;gifted&#8217; breeds, although the skill also exists in other dog breeds.<\/p>\n<p>In their new study, the team set out to understand the specific characteristics of Gifted World Learner (GWL) dogs.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#8216;Because GWL dogs are so rare, until now there were only anecdotes about their background,&#8217; said Professor Adam Miklosi, co-author of the study.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#8216;The rare ability to learn object names is the first documented case of talent in a non-human species.&#8217;<\/p>\n<p>For five years, the researchers searched around the world for GWL dogs.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#8216;This was a citizen science project,&#8217; said Dr Claudia Fugazza, team leader.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#8216;When a dog owner told us they thought their dog knew toy names, we gave them instructions on how to self-test their dog and asked them to send us the video of the test.&#8217;<\/p>\n<p>The researchers then held a video call with the owners to test the dog&#8217;s vocabulary under controlled conditions.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>And if the dog showed that he or she\u00a0knew the names of their toys, the researchers asked the owners to fill out a questionnaire.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#8216;In the questionnaire, we asked the owners about their dog&#8217;s life experience, their own experience in raising and training dogs, and about the process by which the dog came to learn the names of his\/her toys,&#8217; explained Dr Andrea Sommese, co-author of the study.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>In total, the researchers found 41 GWL dogs from nine countries &#8211;\u00a0the US, the UK, Brazil, Canada, Norway, Netherlands, Spain, Portugal and Hungary.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/i.dailymail.co.uk\/1s\/2023\/12\/13\/16\/78921235-12859881-In_total_the_researchers_found_41_GWL_dogs_from_nine_countries_t-a-187_1702485475887.jpg\" height=\"476\" width=\"634\"><\/p>\n<p>In total, the researchers found 41 GWL dogs from nine countries &#8211; the US, the UK, Brazil, Canada, Norway, Netherlands, Spain, Portugal and Hungary. Pictured: Augie<\/p>\n<p>&#8216;In our previous studies we have shown that GWL dogs learn new object names very fast,&#8217; said Dr Dror.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><span>&#8216;So, it is not surprising that when we conducted the test with the dogs, the average number\u00a0<\/span>of toys known by the dogs was 29.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#8216;But when we published the results, more than 50% of the owners reported that their dogs had already acquired a vocabulary of over 100 toy names.&#8217;<\/p>\n<p>The researchers hope the findings will encourage owners of other gifted dogs to come forwards and join the research project.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#8216;The relatively large sample of dogs documented in this study, helps us to identify the common characteristics that are shared among these dogs, and brings us one step closer in the quest of understanding their unique ability,&#8217; Dr Miklosi added.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<h3>WHAT ARE THE TEN COMMONLY HELD MYTHS ABOUT DOGS?<\/h3>\n<p>It is easy to believe that dogs like what we like, but this is not always strictly true.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Here are ten things which people should remember when trying to understand their pets, according to\u00a0Animal behaviour experts Dr Melissa Starling and Dr Paul McGreevy, from the University of Sydney.<\/p>\n<p>1. Dogs don&#8217;t like to share\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>2. Not all dogs like to be hugged or patted\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>3. A barking dog is not always an aggressive dog\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>4. Dogs do not like other dogs entering their territory\/home<\/p>\n<p>5. Dogs like to be active and don&#8217;t need as much relaxation time as humans\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>6. Not all dogs are overly friendly, some are shyer to begin with\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>7. A dog that appears friendly can soon become aggressive\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>8. Dogs need open space and new areas to explore. Playing in the garden won&#8217;t always suffice\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>9.
