Stuck for home inspo? Here are the 5 DIY influencers to follow right now
So you want to make your home look amazing, but don’t know where to start – and, even more annoyingly, don’t have much of a budget either…
Well, don’t fret as Metro has done all the hard work for you and found the best DIY influencers to follow, who also know a thing or two about creating a mean makeover for less.
Here’s our faves to choose from…
SAM TAYLOR-CROOKS
A firm believer that any property, whether it’s rented, new build, or the budget is extremely tight, can be a dream home, Sam has embarked on teaching people how to do easy DIY transformations without spending a fortune.
She has both a blog and almost 65k followers on Instagram too.
Top Tip: ‘Adding panelling to a blank wall can create character and add interest to any room. However if you’re not confident with using power tools or cutting wood, you can order all the mdf or wood strips you need online cut to your exact measurements.
‘Many hardware stores also offer free cuts when you buy your wood too. This way no cutting or power tools are needed, you can simply stick your panels onto your wall.
‘The wood for my bedroom panelling cost me £28 to buy online – so is a really budget-friendly DIY too.’
Ben Uyeda
Ben makes it look easy. He stepped away from the award-winning architecture firm he co-founded to concentrate on teaching people how to make beautiful furniture that is affordable – and in the process amassed 354k followers on Insta.
He’s also done a TEDx talk. Ben likes to focus on sustainable design, so he often uses recycled material, as well as using the kinds of cheap woods people normally walk past in the DIY superstore.
Top tip: ‘I think that big but simple DIY projects are the best place to start. It’s easier to hide mistakes across larger pieces and they don’t require the fine motor skills that come with experience. Large projects also can result in saving more money and can lead to a higher sense of accomplishment.’

Georgina Burnett
Georgina made her name as a weather presenter but she now helps people to nail practical DIY projects on a rainy day.
Georgina – aka the The Home Genie – oozes enthusiasm and is never afraid to get her hands dirty or learn new things, and this no frills approach really shines through, whether she is choosing a skirting board or refurbishing a kitchen worktop.
Top tip: ‘In any DIY project I always think about what can be reused or repurposed, not just for sustainability reasons but it also makes the budget stretch further. If anything goes wrong the stakes are lower, but when it goes right it’s even more satisfying.
I’ll never forget my late Nanna’s face when I said I was going to paint her old fabric armchair, but it would have cost more than it’s worth to reupholster. That project is now my most watched YouTube video.’
Vikki Savage
Vikki is all about using her spare time to learn new skills and trying things that she didn’t think she could do.
Vikki has renovated her 1930s family home with her own two hands, bringing back the grandeur as well as putting her own stamp on it – most of the time solving problems as she goes.
Her honest approach and fearlessness has earned her almost 100k followers on Instagram.
Top Tip: ‘My top DIY tip is always to give things a try, I genuinely think most people would surprise themselves with how competent they are. I’m asked a lot how I learnt to do everything we do ourselves, the answer is just that I did a bit of research and learnt as I went.
‘Take the tiling in my fireplace – I didn’t want to pay someone to do it so I looked it up on YouTube and did it myself.’

Victoria Emes
Comedian Victoria has almost a quarter of a million followers on her Instagram but after her posts about DIY and home renovation were so popular she branched out into a separate account to show her love of DIY.
That account now has almost 43k followers and growing fast, helped by Victoria’s blend of humour and practicality, proving that with DIY it’s best not to take yourself too seriously.
Top Tip: ‘When wallpapering, measure your length of wallpaper out and pre match the next piece on the floor before hanging. This saves awkwardly holding up the paper to the wall and creates less wastage.’
