Matt Hancock slammed by Celeb SAS co-star as he insists No one likes the guy
The stars of Celebrity SAS: Who Dares Wins have opened up about working with politician Matt Hancock on the show, with instructor Rudy Reyes revealing "everybody doesn't like the guy".
This year's series sees the likes of singer Gareth Gates, model Danielle Lloyd, TOWIE's James 'Arg' Argent and Olympic athlete Perri Shakes-Drayton tackle the ultimate Channel 4 challenge, although fans were shocked to learn that Matt Hancock – the Health Secretary during the COVID-19 pandemic – was also taking part.
It seems the public weren't the only ones with reservations, with contestant and footballer Jermaine Pennant admitting that he had to leave his feelings about Matt and his political career at the door.
"I think you have an opinion about him and when you go in there, you leave it where it is," he said. "As soon as you come out, your opinion goes back that way.
"I think everyone in the UK probably had that same opinion and obviously you go in here, you’re working hard together and you’re getting abused and you work as a team."
Meanwhile, Rudy Reyes – the former US Navy Seal who is an instructor on the show – said that he found out who Matt Hancock was after he signed up for Celeb SAS.
"As the American here, I didn’t know who Matt Hancock was so it’s my job just to take him as a recruit," he said. "Everybody else doesn’t like the guy and I come to find out that nobody likes him.
"I wanted to let his actions and how he shows up for each task and how he conducts himself dictate the way. But we did notice quite quickly that he can’t take criticism and we don’t like that. There’s no time to bark orders back the DS. "
The series sees Love Island’s Montana Brown, TOWIE star Amber Turner and retired athlete Perri Shakes-Drayton take on a series of physically and mentally taxing challenges in the Vietnamese jungle whilst surveyed by the Directing Staff.
With Liberty X's Michelle Heaton, The Wanted's Siva Kaneswaran, rugby star Gareth Thomas and Emmerdale's Kirsty-Leigh Porter also taking part, the famous faces give up their glamorous lifestyles for brutal interrogations and punishing exercises.
The cast even admitted that they had all suffered with trench foot due to the camp's wet condition, with Danielle saying, "Our feet were being eaten away. The skin was peeling.”
Celebrity SAS: Who Dares Wins starts tonight at 9pm on Channel 4.
