Gary Lineker impartiality row sparks new rules for flagship BBC presenters
Tim Davie admits regret over Gary Lineker affair
A set of new rules have been introduced for flagship presenters at the BBC following Gary Lineker’s controversial social media posts about the government earlier this year.
The BBC report reveals that now, high-profile presenters who work for the broadcaster should be allowed to express their views on issues and policies.
However, they should stop when it comes to “political campaigning or for activist organisations”.
It comes after a review, which was led by former ITN chief executive John Hardie, was released regarding the BBC’s guidelines on social media.
Now, there will be “a particular responsibility” for some stars “to respect the BBC’s impartiality, because of their profile on the BBC”.
