Tesco launches magic tills in big shake up for supermarket checkouts
People either love or hate self-service checkouts, but the latest shake-up could change your views.
Tesco has launched a new "magic" system as part of a big makeover in the checkout area. It's said the brand has introduced the change to try and prevent the annoying "unexpected item in the bagging area" problems at the checkout.
It's trialling the new technology, which involves all the shelves being weighed, as this will mean all customers have to do is pop their purchases in their baskets. The technology will also make use of sensors and cameras in Tesco stores to monitor what sort of items shoppers put in their bags.

It does this to tell people how much they've spent. Then customers can head to the self-service checkouts where they can see what they have in their baskets.
According to reports by Birmingham Live, you can check everything is accurate before paying for your items.
Sarah Quiggin, head of store customer experience, said: "This is about cutting out some of the challenges around scanning. Sometimes there can be issues with certain barcodes and products. The alert for an 'unexpected item in the bagging area' is a classic one that customers get frustrated about, understandably. With the 'no-scan' tills, you turn up to the checkout and you pay."
Previously The Sunday Times also reported the system has already launched in a Hammersmith store. One shopper praised the new method of shopping, saying: "It was like magic the first time, because it came up on the screen without me doing anything. I was confused – but I use it every time now."
The move follows Tesco's launch of GetGo stores, which is a checkout-free shopping experience that people can use in certain Tesco Express stores. Once you’ve registered for GetGo, you can then scan a QR code at either the entrance or exit, depending on where it's located at the store.
From this point you can then shop as normal. The system uses both cameras and weight sensors to track what you’ve picked up. It will then charge you automatically for your items when you leave the store.
