Teachers are so fed up with misbehaving kids they're REFUSING to turn up to school – with staff being attacked by pupils | The Sun

TEACHERS are on strike today after violent pupils left them fearing for their own safety.

Assaults and threats on staff are so common at two Oasis Academy schools in Kent that teachers say their well-being is "at risk".

Ofsted inspectors had previously found pupils using "foul, homophobic, racist and sexist language" at the schools.

Amid a wave of "completely unacceptable" behaviour, the National Education Union demanded negotiations with managers Oasis Trust.

Among demands from teachers at the sites in Sheerness and Minster, both on the Isle of Sheppey, was that violent kids must be excluded for a fixed ten day period.

Problems surrounding the safe management of poor pupil behaviour and staff were also on the table.

Workload and a dispute over promised bonus payments also featured in discussions.

But negotiations collapsed after the school failed to resolve the issues.

On Wednesday around 80 teachers walked out, forcing the school to close.

Nick Childs, senior regional officer for the NEU, said strike action is "unavoidable".

He added: "Behaviour at the school is currently completely unacceptable.

“Lessons are regularly disturbed and staff safety and well-being put at risk.“

Further strike action has been scheduled for November 28 and 29 and December 5 to 7.

Parents and carers were sent a letter on Monday as a “pre-warning” of the strikes, with a second letter sent out at 4pm on Tuesday.

It is understood online resources have been made available for year groups.

An NEU statement said: "Teachers at the school have been calling for fixed exclusion tariffs of 10 days for assaults or threats of assaults against staff and pupils following numerous incidences of pupil threats and violence."

The Oasis Academy was rated inadequate by Ofsted in August 2022.

That year the Department for Education removed the school from the Oasis Community Learning Trust and created two new schools.

Last month the DfE confirmed Leigh Academies Trust and EKC Schools Trust were the preferred trusts to take over in September 2024.

The first will run a more academic school while the second will offer more vocational and technical courses.

Last week, a new principal for the proposed Leigh Academies school in Minster was announced.

An Oasis Academy spokesman said: "Whilst this is a scenario that nobody wants, we have had positive discussions with the union, and we are confident that we have made significant progress.

"We remain committed to working positively with staff representatives to try and avoid any future disruption, and to ensure that Oasis Academy Isle of Sheppey is a school where everybody can thrive."
