I'm 34 and 3ft tall – strangers pat my head and my 5ft 9 man's mum doesn't approve but we're madly in love | The Sun

GAINING your mother-in-law’s approval is a fear for a lot of women, but it was even more daunting for Yesi Lainez.

Living with a super rare form of dwarfism, the 34-year-old is nearly 3ft smaller than her husband Bryan, 36.

Yesi is 2ft 11 tall, the average height of a two-year-old, while Bryan is 5ft 9.

She has diastrophic dysplasia which affects one in a million people and means she has to use a wheelchair in day-to-day life.

And while Yesi was aware it may take time for the parents of whoever she married to accept her, Bryan’s mum Maggie was more “hesitant” than she anticipated.

“When I met her, I could tell she was tense,” Yesi told Truly.

“She said to Bryan, ‘are you sure you want to be with someone where you’re gonna wipe their butt for the rest of your life?’”

After this, the couple didn’t speak to Maggie for six months.

Yesi’s mother-in-law assumed her condition made her totally dependent on Bryan, who would have to dedicate his life to being a carer.

However, this is far from the truth for the couple who live in California, US.

Yesi lives a largely independent life where she is able to get around on her own, drive and work as a therapist.

The couple, who met online, went for dinner on their first date back in 2018 and moved in with each other a year later.

They had a beach wedding in the Bahamas in September 2021 – but Bryan’s mum wasn't keen on the match and voiced her opinions, causing a familial rift.

Since then, the trio have mended their relationship as Maggie has learnt more about Yesi’s life and the dynamic between the couple.

Yesi has faced judgement her whole life due to her height, including being told she should “only date another little person”.

And just like Maggie, a lot of people assume that Bryan is Yesi’s carer, rather than her husband.

“Someone will walk up to Yesi and just randomly pat her on the head,” Bryan said.

Due to her diastrophic dysplasia, Yesi’s cartilage and joints degenerate faster than the average person.
