A MUM has hit back at cruel trolls who have slammed her for buying her daughter second-hand gifts for Christmas – despite recently forking out on her dream wedding.

Scarlett, who has an 18-month-old daughter, responded to a negative remark she received on social media which read: "So spend £12k on your wedding but buy your child secondhand toys?"

In a clip posted to TikTok (@homewithscarlett), she branded the comment "ridiculous," and explains: "So it's basically referring to the fact that we just had our dream wedding, yet we're buying our daughter second hand toys, which is apparently embarrassing.

"And every last penny that we have should go on our daughter, which it does, by the way."

Scarlett goes on to point out that firstly, her dream wedding wouldn't have been possible if it wasn't for the generosity of her and her husband's parents.

"And we are so so thankful and so grateful for that," she says.

"She has all the clothes in the world, all the toys in the world, and she gets bought things literally every single week."

Scarlett explains that secondly, people have no idea how much money or income they have as a family.

"So I'm a stay at home mum, which I'm so, so grateful that I have the opportunity to do, and I wouldn't have this opportunity if it wasn't for social media," she says.

"But some months I might not get any money, other months
I might get the same amount as I would've if I was working,
but I chose to live like that so I can watch my daughter grow and be at home with her every single day.

"And my husband, he's just got an average job, he works with the council, he gets an average amount of money.

"So no, we don't earn loads and loads of money."

She goes on to say that they could afford to buy those presents new, but adds that's not the point.

"Buying second hand toys is not embarrassing," she says.

"Even if I was on £100,000 a year, I'd still choose to buy second hand toys because it can save you so much money.

"And that money that we have saved will then go towards something for the family, like a family holiday or something."

Scarlett explains that her daughter Alicia is going to be grateful whether she has a toy that's £20 or a toy that's £60.

"She's 18 months old, she could not care less.

"There's going to be thousands and thousands of other mums on this app that have also bought things from vintage when they could have probably bought it brand new, because why the hell not?

"Why would you spend the money when you can get it lot cheaper and it's basically exactly the same?

"There's literally children out there that have nothing, and they're going to wake on Christmas with literally no Christmas presents.

"It just breaks my heart. Sorry for crying. I just can't help get upset
when I think about all the less privileged children."

Scarlett captioned the post: "There's so much judgement on this app. Buying second hand toys is NOT embarrassing, no matter how much money you might earn.

"Especially when shes going to outgrow them or only play with them a couple of times."

The post has since gone viral, racking up a whopping 39k views and several comments from social media users online, with many jumping to Scarlett's defense.

"It’s not the money you give them it’s the memories that are made sweetheart. Ignore the negative people lovely," wrote one.

A second penned: "I honestly can't see the problem with second hand toys. I've bought some second hand bits of Vinted for Christmas."

A third commented: "Never be ashamed for buying second hand, I LOVE Vinted for clothes especially designer, my sons only in them for a few months so why does it matter."

Meanwhile, a fourth noted: "Buying second hand is also better for the environment."

Another added: "A wedding is (hopefully) a once in a lifetime occasion. Toys last months at most and are bad for the environment!"
