Chris Evans aims dig at forgettable former employer BBC as he praises rivals

Chris Evans Has Cheeky Dig At Bbc Radio

Chris Evans has seemingly aimed a thinly-veiled dig at the BBC after praising other rival radio stations.

On Tuesday, the broadcaster appeared on his Virgin Radio Breakfast Show, where he was discussing a recent influx of “new listeners”.

Opening the segment, Chris, 57, said: “We’re getting a lot of texts from new listeners.

“Please tell me you’re not winding me up because I get very excited.”

He then proceeded to say that if regular fans were posing as new listeners, they should “stop” because he could get “too excited”.

The star continued: “If the figures come in and the figures are down but we’re getting loads of texts off new listeners? They’re just winding you up.

“They don’t even listen at all, we’re just being sent texts from Global troll farms – no offence to Global.”

He added that Global Radio staff were Virgin’s “brothers and sisters in the radio industry” before further claiming that he “loved” the station.

“I love Global, I love anybody in radio doing the right things for the right reasons,” he said.

Chris then went on to list Bauer as another radio station that he admires, before saying: “I don’t know any others, to be honest, I used to know them all.”

The breakfast host added: “Anybody else? Oh, the whole of the BBC. Sorry, I forgot.”

The cheeky comment comes five years after the 57-year-old quit BBC Radio 2 after serving eight years at the helm.

At the time of his leave, he said: “I see nothing but exciting and groundbreaking opportunities ahead. In a medium that is changing so quickly on a daily basis, the potential for growth is unprecedented.

“Our plan is, to give it all we’ve got, see where we can get to and have the most possible fun along the way. It makes me smile every time I think about it.”

Prior to taking over Virgin Radio’s Breakfast show, the presenter had worked at Radio 2 for 13 years and took over the morning slot from Sir Terry Wogan in January 2010.

In a statement, Chris said that his time at the station had “flashed by” in the “blink of an eye”.

He added that he had learnt so much from so many people and that he would be “eternally grateful” for the experience.

Listen to the Chris Evans Breakfast Show weekdays from 6.30am on Virgin Radio.
