Dame Judi Dench, 88, reveals a paramedic asked if she ‘had a carer’ as she discusses ‘living for the moment’ with friend Brendan O’Hea

Dame Judi Dench revealed a paramedic once asked if she ‘had a carer’ as she discussed ‘living in the now’ with her friend Brendan O’Hea.

Appearing on the cover of Good Housekeeping’s January edition, the legendary actress, 88, admitted ‘life is too short’ to think about the future as she spoke about her attitude to ageing.

Accompanied by her old friend Brendan, following the release of their new book Shakespeare: The Man Who Pays The Rent, she looked as elegant as ever while posing for photos.

Judi wore a champagne satin blouse with matching smart trousers and a chic beige scarf for the cover.

Speaking to the publication, she discussed growing older, saying: ‘I have no attitude to it; I don’t want to even think about it.

‘A paramedic once said to me, “Do we have a carer? What’s our name?” and I said, “I’ve just done eight weeks at the Garrick Theatre!”‘

‘If you start looking ahead, you miss the bits that are happening now. I find it very hard to talk about two or three days’ time; I think, “No, no, no, this bit is lovely.”

‘That’s not to say you don’t prepare for things in the way that we have to, but I think it’s a pity if you waste the moment. Life is too short.’

Adding on her new book with Brendan, she continued: ‘Because we’re old friends, it was just like having a very relaxed chat – or a long series of them.

‘Brendan would come to my house, put his recorder on, and we’d talk about all these wonderful memories.’

‘Oh God, yes. I’ve got recordings of Jude trying to see how much popcorn she can fit in her mouth and then laughing. She never misses an opportunity to muck about,’ Brendan added.

Last month, Dame Judi admitted she pretends to be younger as a way of ‘not thinking of age’.

The actress, who has openly spoke about her health conditions impacting her career in the past, believes she’s only 56.

She said: ‘We’ve got to keep going and not think of age too much. You have to think you are about 56.

‘Also I don’t make a point of keeping fit. I am very bad at that.’

Judi is celebrating more than 60 years in showbusiness as she is set to appear as a special guest on the new series of Portrait Artist of the Year on Sky Arts.

Judi will sit for over four hours while having her portrait painted by 10 previous winners.

On the show, she told presenter Dame Joan Bakewell: ‘I am not frightfully good at sitting still and I am very inclined to drop off. After lunch is a tricky time for me.’
