Strictlys Layton Williams overwhelmed by trolls as Lorraine Kelly sends love

Strictly’s Layton Williams addresses ‘unfair’ trained dancer backlash

Layton Williams spoke of being “overwhelmed” by both the love he’d received and the trolling as he braced himself and prepared to face more scrutiny on tonight’s episode of Strictly Come Dancing.

The 29-year-old Bad Education star then found himself thanking Lorraine Kelly, 63, after she posted a gushing tribute to him.

In his original post, he uploaded a photo of himself giving the peace sign to the camera, exclaiming: “The messages of love are overwhelming but as is the low-key trolling.

“I’m just here to have fun like all the other contestants. I’m trying to handle this with a smile and determination to slay another day but reminder #BeKind.”

Lorraine did exactly that, replying within minutes to tell the West End star: “You are fabulous – cheered us all up with your energy and joy. Be very proud xxxx.”

He then fired back with an appreciative “Thanks Lorraine”, before attaching a love heart and three kisses.

Layton is paired with 25-year-old pro Nikita Kuzmin, but the male dance partnership has ruffled some feathers among traditionalists, as he demonstrated when he retweeted a post from one of his followers.

The message criticised him for “acting like a fairy” and suggested it was “not normal”, only for the defiant star to repost it, declaring himself “Team Fairy”.

After his first dance this week, he admitted that the samba was “not easy”, but vowed he’d remember to turn his feet out next time.

In an emotional tweet, he told more than 51,000 followers: “I’m proud of what we achieved. Thanks to the judges for their feedback & @kuzmin__nikita for being the best teacher.

“We’re gonna switch it up for y’all next week!” he promised.

However, the pair’s quickstep to the tune of ‘Puttin’ On The Ritz’ had already proved enormously popular, with head judge Shirley Ballas among those giving the dance a standing ovation.

Shirley told the pair they’d given the “dance of the night”, while notoriously strict co-judge Craig Revel-Horwood described the performance as “incredible”.

That was in spite of him recently giving Love Island’s Zara McDermott and her pro partner Graziano di Prima just three out of ten for their debut and six out of ten the following week.

Layton and Nikita looked elated as they sailed straight to the top of the leaderboard, with scores of nine out of ten.

Now, Layton has promised to give an even more spirited performance for his eagerly-awaited follow-up dance – and fans can’t wait.

Strictly Come Dancing: The Results airs tonight at 7.15pm on BBC One and BBC iPlayer.
