Best desserts to enjoy if you have high cholesterol – and one to avoid
High cholesterol: Nutritionist reveals top prevention tips
Experienced orthodontist Dr Sarah Sade, who trained at Barts and The London School of Medicine and Dentistry in 2007, spoke to Express.co.uk about desserts to have when you have high cholesterol.
“Enjoying an occasional indulgence won’t significantly impact cholesterol levels,” said Dr Sade.
While it’s the overall pattern of your diet that matters most, Dr Sade shared her expertise on delicious desserts.
“Incorporating heart-healthy desserts and avoiding the worst culprits can be part of a cholesterol-conscious diet,” she said.
Heart-healthy desserts
Dr Sade shared three of the best desserts for high cholesterol, which are:
- Yoghurt and fruit parfait
- Oatmeal cookies
- Dark chocolate with nuts.

“Combining low-fat yoghurt with fresh fruit provides a delightful and heart-healthy dessert,” said Dr Sade.
“The fibre in fruit and probiotics in yoghurt can support cholesterol management.”
Dr Sade added: “Homemade oatmeal cookies made with whole grains can be a wholesome dessert option.
“Oats contain beta-glucans, which have been shown to help lower cholesterol.”

As for dark chocolate, while it contains antioxidants that could promote heart health, Dr Sade emphasised the importance of moderation.
The nuts, on the other hand, offer healthy fats and fibre, with Dr Sade most fond of almonds.
Worst desserts for cholesterol
Dr Sade strongly recommends anybody with high cholesterol to avoid:
- Cakes and pastries
- Ice cream
- Fried desserts.
Cakes and pastries not only contain a lot of sugar, including refined sugar, they are laden with trans fats, which can raise cholesterol levels.
Meanwhile, ice cream is typically high in saturated fat which contributes to high cholesterol.
And fried desserts, like doughnuts, aren’t great for cholesterol levels.
“High cholesterol increases the risk of developing heart disease and clogged arteries,” cautioned Dr Sade, which is why you must be careful with what you eat.
Too much cholesterol is a risk factor for life-threatening conditions such as heart attacks, stroke, and other cardiovascular complications.
