Five winter skincare must-dos for mature skin – dermatologists tips
A drier, redder, itchier and flakier look could put you in a bad mood during winter, but it doesn’t have to be this way.
While low humidity outside and central heating inside can wreak havoc on the face, there are ways to prevent and correct distressed skin.
Cleansing and exfoliation
Dermatologist Dr Melegh recommends reducing any sort of exfoliation down to once or twice weekly.
“Instead, switch to a daily gentle and water-free cream cleanser to clean skin and avoid washing the face too much with water,” Dr Melegh advised.
She explained why water can be a no-go: “Water can evaporate more moisture from the surface of the skin when it dries, making it drier and more reactive.”

What about showering?
Dr Melegh advised taking lukewarm and short showers to not aggravate the skin, and to moisturise straight afterwards.
UV protection
While it’s cold outside and the sun could be hiding behind the clouds, Dr Melegh is a big advocate of sun protection even in winter.
“UV protection is crucial for preserving and protecting mature skin in winter,” said Dr Melegh.
“Cold windburn and UV reflection from clouds can inflame skin sensitivity and increase TEWL (transepidermal water loss) and red skin.”

Dr Melegh advised: “Always use an SPF of at least 20, either as a stand-alone product or as part of foundation or concealing product.
“Make sure the SPF product also contains moisturising ingredients and is suitable for sensitive skin.”
Dr Melegh added: “I’d always pick a pure mineral SPF over a chemical filter for sensitive mature winter skin.”
Moisturiser
Using a moisturising product before you apply makeup is recommended, even if all you’re using is a tinted moisturiser or concealer.
Dr Melegh prefers a serum over a heavy moisturiser, though, as the product absorbs more quickly and sits better under cosmetics.
“Try Kalme TeQ Serum,” suggested Dr Melegh, which can help to repair the skin barrier.
Luscious lips
Dry, cracked lips are not a good look for anybody, and without proper care, a cold sore could appear.
“Try Lip Q Liquorice Balm,” advised Dr Melegh; this lip balm keeps lips hydrated and also reduces the risk of an unsightly cold sore making an appearance.
