Rory Mcllroy didn’t hold back while discussing fellow golfer Patrick Cantlay, branding the American player a d***.
Mcllroy also shed new light on his Ryder Cup row involving Cantlay’s caddie, Joe LaCava, which resulted in the Northern Irishman shouting expletives and being restrained in the parking lot.
‘Here’s what angered me,’ McIlroy told the Irish Independent. ‘My relationship with Cantlay is average at best. ‘We don’t have a ton in common and see the world quite differently.’
‘And they’re trying to defuse the situation, but I start having a go at them,’ McIlroy added.
‘Joe LaCava used to be a nice guy when he was caddying for Tiger, and now he’s caddying for that d*** he’s turned into a … I still wasn’t in a great headspace.’

McIlroy, who conceded it wasn’t his ‘finest moment’, also revealed that Tiger Woods reached out following the incident at Rome’s Marco Simone Golf & Country Club.
‘I sent him a quick message,’ McIlroy added. ‘It will be fine… long day… just want to go to bed.’
McIlroy had to be bundled into a car by team-mate Shane Lowry amid astonishing scenes earlier this year.
The 34-year-old was left furious when LaCava stood in his line of vision twirling his cap as he attempted to line up what would have been a match-saving putt.
Cantlay had been jeered all day by the home supporters for reportedly refusing to wear his USA cap in protest at not being paid to play. After McIlroy confronted Cantlay’s bag man on the green, tempers boiled over again in the car park.
