‘Simple and easy’ recipe for the ‘perfect’ poached egg in two minutes
A chef and mum has created the “most simple and easy to understand” recipe to make perfect poached eggs every time you cook them.
There is nothing better than a soft poached egg with buttery toast to start your weekend, but some people can feel weary of trying to poach eggs as it is easy for the egg to fall apart or not keep its shape.
Cook Jean Choi (@whatgreatgrandmaate) is a nutritional therapy practitioner and cookbook author who has explained in a video there is an easy way to master poaching an egg without having to use any tricks or hacks.
Fans of the cook have been amazed at Jean’s delicious breakfast recipes but have begged her to share how to “perfectly” poach an egg without messing it up after seeing Jean’s delicious eggy dishes.
While it is a very common method to use vinegar to cook a poached egg, Jean has said that this is not necessary, and all you need to cook a poached egg is a pot, strainer, eggs and knowing how long they need to be in the water.
How to make a perfect poached egg every time without fail
To begin, heat a pot of water on a medium heat. While you are waiting for the water to heat up, use a fine mesh strainer to crack your eggs into a small bowl.
According to Jean, this step is essential as it removes all the “stringy bits” from the egg and this will help the egg keep its shape.
Once the water is “slightly shimmering” then stir the water a few times with a spoon and then “gently” drop your egg in. The best way to do this is by using a small bowl and simply dipping the spoon in the water and letting the egg slide in.
Now it is time for your eggs to cook. Jean said: “Set a timer for exactly two minutes. I don’t add any vinegar because I don’t really notice that it makes a difference.”
When the time is up, carefully take your egg out of the pot with a spoon and use Jean’s test to figure out if the egg has cooked.
Jean explained: “I like to tap the egg white with my finger to make sure it’s firm and cooked through.” If your egg feels firm, then it is cooked through and ready.
