Alison Hammond takes brutal swipe at Matt Hancock over TV career

Celebrity SAS: Who Dares Wins: Series 5 trailer

Alison Hammond took a savage swipe and made her opinion of former Health Secretary Matt Hancock very clear as he joined Celebrity SAS: Who Dares Wins.

Last year, Matt signed up to appear on I’m A Celebrity…Get Me Out of Here! which left many people divided over his decision and some claimed he was abandoning his constituents in a cost-of-living crisis.

Others were furious that Matt had been cast after his response to the pandemic and his decision to break social distancing rules by kissing a colleague in his office.

Matt is now set to appear in the upcoming season of Celebrity SAS: Who Dares Wins, a decision Alison did not let go lightly.

During today’s episode of This Morning, a clip was played of Matt being interrogated on the show, in which he said he’d wanted to take part after “going through something really big…handling the pandemic”.

As the clip came to a close, Alison burst out laughing while co-host Dermot O’Leary quipped: “Does he mean mismanaged the pandemic?”

Their guest Gyles Brandreth said Matt had now quit politics and wanted a “challenging experience”.

Dermot jumped in: “And managing an affair too. A very challenging experience,” leaving Alison to not let the ex-politician off easy, referencing his “lack of leadership”.

“I mean, no really? You’ve got to remember, every time I look at him, I think of loved ones who died during the pandemic.”

Gyles once again tried to defend Matt’s actions, Alison fumed: “Do you think that’s his best? Being distracted?”

They ended the debate by agreeing that they didn’t think that sitting politicians should be taking part in reality shows.

Chief instructor Billy Billingham said earlier this year that Matt will be “absolutely destroyed”.

He added to The Sun: “We treat everybody the same and we really went at him. In the interrogation bit, he gets destroyed, absolutely destroyed.

“At the time I thought, ‘Oh, hang on, maybe this is a bit much?’ But no, he deserved it.

“The idea is every single contestant will either leave on day one or will leave as a better version of themselves and with Matt Hancock, he’s still got a long way to go.”

Celebrity SAS: Who Dares Wins returns on Tuesday at 9.30pm on Channel 4.

This Morning airs weekdays from 10am on ITV1.
