Coleen Rooney wants to move on after Wagatha doc
She’s spoken about her experiences in depth in her Disney+ documentary and Coleen Rooney has now exclusively told OK! that reliving some of her most painful moments – including the death of her little sister Rosie and her dramatic court battle with Rebekah Vardy – has been far from easy.
But it’s also been a cathartic process that is finally enabling her to find closure in what has been an emotional and difficult time for her family.
“It was hard,” Coleen said. “The interviews got emotional and it brought up memories. It was a really difficult time that I went through and my family went through it with me as well. During the [court] case, even though I was physically there looking after my children, mentally I just wasn’t there.”
Coleen’s new three-part documentary tells her side of what was one of the biggest celebrity scandals of the last few years. It also gives a rare glimpse into Coleen and her husband Wayne’s relationship, including Coleen’s heartache after Wayne was caught drink-driving in 2017, with “party girl” Laura Simpson in his car.
Making Coleen Rooney: The Real Wagatha Story may have been an emotional process, but Coleen, 37, says that putting across her perspective has helped her feel she can finally draw a line under the court saga. She’s hoping that once the hype around the documentary dies down, she can look forward to a fresh start in the new year.
“A massive cloud had been lifted,” said Coleen, who is mum to Kai, 13, Klay, 10, Kit, seven, and Cass, five. “Reflecting back when we were filming did bring up those difficult times, but now it’s all over, so we can celebrate."
She continued: "Maybe once this year has ended, that will draw a line under it, once it’s [the documentary] out and people have seen it. I think into the new year – that will be a good time to say bye to it.”
After launching an elaborate sting in 2019, Coleen famously accused fellow WAG Rebekah Vardy’s Instagram account of leaking stories about her to the press. But Rebekah – who is married to Leicester City striker Jamie Vardy – denied the allegation.
She brought Coleen to trial for libel, but lost the case and was ordered to pay her up to £1.5 million in legal fees. Coleen maintained a dignified silence throughout the drama, but she recently admitted that it took its toll on her marriage to Wayne.
“There were certain moments where we did have disagreements – not over the case, but he would get annoyed with me because
I was quite short-tempered,” she revealed. “I didn’t have time for him. I lost focus.”
Of course, it’s far from the first time the couple have endured difficult times. They have famously weathered scandals over Wayne’s alleged infidelities and, in the documentary, Coleen also talks about her decision to move out temporarily in 2017, when Wayne was charged with drink-driving after a night out partying. He gave a lift to office worker Laura in his car, while Coleen was pregnant at home.
“I was just heartbroken,” Coleen says in the documentary. “Wayne wanted it all to go back to normal, but it wasn’t as easy as that. I was still mad and didn’t know what the future was for us as a couple. I said to him, ‘I can’t carry on with this.’”
The couple resolved their issues and now the documentary has been released, a source exclusively told OK! Coleen is determined to have a fresh start.
“Filming the documentary means Coleen and Wayne can say goodbye to all the stress of the Wagatha case and the added pressure on their marriage living through such a challenging time,” said the source.
“She and Wayne have been through the mill with the court case but now they’re putting it behind them. They’re focusing on the future. They’re stronger than ever and they’re in a great place. They’re a team.”
The source added that Coleen is also keen to make the most of her new profile. Meanwhile, Wayne, 38, is having his own fresh start, as he gets stuck into his new role as manager of Birmingham City Football Club.
“Filming the documentary reminded her how good she is in front of the camera and how much she likes being there,” our source said. “There are two things money can’t buy – natural talent and likeability – and Coleen has both of them in bundles.
“Her boys are a bit older now and Wayne will be incredibly busy with his new work role, so now it’s her time to do something for herself. Coleen’s been through a lot and she’d love to do some documentary work around issues that affect people.
“She’s followed Wayne round or his career and now it’s her time to do what she wants to do. The boys are a bit older now and they will need her a little less and she has great support from her family, especially her mum. Coleen’s seen the reaction she’s had in recent weeks and she’s thrilled. It’s made her realise this is her time.”
