First look at Ncuti Gatwa in BBCs Doctor Who Christmas special

Ncuti Gatwa and Russell T Davies react to Doctor Who role

Doctor Who will have a Christmas special this year for the first time in five years and the festive offering also marks Ncuti Gatwas’s first full outing as the fifteenth Doctor.

As anticipation continues to build for the episode the BBC have released some first look images. Titled The Church on Ruby Road, which might reference the name of new companion Ruby Sunday, played by Milie Gibson, it appears to be set around the festive season.

One image shows Ncuti as the Doctor with a tree that appears to have a star atop it in the background. Fittingly it is snowing to keep up with the Christmas feel, which is something of a tradition in the show special.

Another image shows Ruby leaning wistfully on what appears to be an empty cot. The images also tease a look at a cute new creature although whether it is good or evil is unknown.

In the images, Ncuti is seen wearing a brown leather coat with an orange top underneath it. However. it is not clear if this will be his usual attire as previously the BBC have released images of him in several different outfits, showing that he has a vast wardrobe compared to his predecessors.

The BBC have already “soft launched” the actor in the iconic role. As part of the 60th anniversary celebrations they aired the movie An Adventure In Time And Space about the long-running sci-fi show’s creation. The film was originally made to mark the 50th anniversary.

During its first outing, David Bradley, who was cast as the late Wiliam Hartnell playing the First Doctor, had a vision of the then Doctor Matt Smith at the end of the film. This was to illustrate that the show would continue.

The show producers recently replaced Matt with Ncuti in his first official appearance as the Doctor on screen, other than in trailers. The next time he is seen will be in the third of the anniversary specials which are currently airing on Saturday nights.

David Tennant is currently occupying the role having returned to the show to play the fourteenth Doctor. However at the end of the third special entitled The Giggle he will regenerate in Ncuti’s doctor. Footage from the anniversary trailers has already shown Ncuti wearing the fourteenth Doctor’s clothes.

The first of the specials The Star Beast ran last Saturday. This coming Saturday (December 2) viewers will see the second offering entitled Wild Blue Yonder. Finally, on December 9 The Giggle will air, featuring Ncuti, who will officially become the Doctor.

Fans will then have to wait over a fortnight for the Christmas Day special.

Doctor Who returns to BBC One next Saturday at 6.30pm.
