Joan Collins recalls chilling warning she received from Marilyn Monroe

Dame Joan Collins reveals advice she got from Marilyn Monroe

Joan Collins revealed Hollywood legend Marilyn Monroe gave her a chilling warning after landing a leading role in a 1950s film.

Appearing on Thursday’s instalment of Loose Women, the actress recalled a time she was at Gene Kelly’s party when she first met the icon.

Speaking to the panel, Joan told them at the time she was 20 years old and everyone there was very intellectual.

She said: “Marilyn, I went over because she was looking a bit lost as well, she was sitting at the bar.”

The 90-year-old confessed that although the actress still looked pretty, Marilyn didn’t look how many people were used to seeing as she didn’t have on any make-up and her hair wasn’t done.

Joan told the panel Marilyn knew she was starring in the film The Girl in the Red Velvet Swing as producers wanted her to be in it.

However, bosses told the Hollywood actress she was too old to have the part they gave to Joan.

Admitting Marilyn was around 29 or 30 at the time, she added: “She was like 29 or 30 and I was playing a 17-year-old so I could do that.

“She said, ‘You’re new in town, one of the things you have to watch out for is the wolves in Hollywood.’

“I said, well I can take care of myself with wolves. We have them in England as well.

“She said, ‘Oh honey no, not the studio bosses, if they don’t get what they want they will cancel your contract, it’s happened to lots of gals.'”

Asked whether or not she found that information intimidating, Joan confessed that after being a child during the Blitz, no one has really intimidated her.

During their conversation, Joan touched on the moment she found out about her sister Jackie Collins’ cancer diagnosis.

Joan said: “It was about six weeks before she died, she said, ‘I’ve got stage four breast cancer.’

“I said, ‘Well haven’t you been having mammograms like I’ve been telling you to have, like I’ve been nagging you for the last 20 years?’”

As she admitted Jackie never wanted to have a mammogram, she started to become emotional speaking about her late sister.

Loose Women continues weekdays on ITV from 12.30pm.
