Magnum PI season 5 finale works as last episode despite cancellation

Magnum PI will soon be no more but despite its cancellation, its creators believe the season five finale “works” when it comes to rounding up the show for good.
In June, it was announced that NBC “opted not to order additional episodes” beyond the fifth series, much to long-term fans’ disappointment.
This isn’t the first time the Magnum reboot has been cancelled either after it was given the axe by its original home on CBS after the fourth series.
The crime drama returned for episode 11 earlier this week with just nine more to go before it’s time to say goodbye to the series for good.
Even though season five wasn’t originally planned as the final outing, showrunner Eric Guggenheim says he is satisfied with how it plays out.

In fact, Guggenheim was so confident in how the series finale ends, that he saw no need to make edits or reshoot scenes following the news of its cancellation.
He explained to TV Line: “I actually think it’s quite satisfying. I’m really proud of the finale.
“There are a couple of threads left dangling that would have been picked up in a season six, but I didn’t want to end on a cliffhanger.
“If I’m being honest, I guess I wanted to play it safe.
“Too many shows have gotten burned with cliffhangers” that were then left unresolved in the wake of cancellation.”

He added: “Is it how I would choose to end the show? No.
“But if it has to be the last episode, I think it absolutely works as a [series] finale.
“So no, there’s no reason to go back and recut or reshoot.”
Unsurprisingly, there has been some backlash from fans following the news of Magnum PI being axed.

A #SaveMagnumPI campaign has been launched since earlier this year with more than 8,000 fans signing a petition to bring it back for season six.
A fan-funded banner was also recently flown over the NBCUniversal lot in LA, reading “Save Magnum PI – Save the Ohana”.
As of yet though, the network has stuck to its decision to cancel the drama with no hint that a U-turn will be made.
