The Long Shadow viewers left ‘so angry their chests hurt’ at sick and disgusting’ police sexism scenes | The Sun

THE Long Shadow viewers have been left ‘so angry their chests hurt’ at 'sick and disgusting’ police sexism scenes.

The third episode of the ITV drama saw the police investigation move to Bradford after another woman was murdered by The Yorkshire Ripper.

The police decide to send a female officer undercover in a bid to catch the serial killer, and began an interview process which involved one officer, Jill, having to remove her jacket so the detectives could "get a better look" at her.

During the episode, the terminology around the women involved in the investigation included words like "tart", and the misogyny portrayed by the male characters soon got to some viewers watching at home.

Taking to X – formerly Twitter – one raged: "#TheLongShadow the language from those police officers towards female officers 'good lass', 'good girl' & about victims 'she weren't a prostitute she were innocent'. Their poor attitudes towards women, matched their incompetence as detectives… just dreadful!!"

Another added: "Watching episode 3 … I’m so angry at these awful misogynistic policemen, I have a pain in my chest .."

A third tweeted: "Disgraceful the way male coppers used to treat women in the 70s. #TheLongShadow."

The seven-part series follows the five-year manhunt for Peter Sutcliffe, or The Yorkshire Ripper as he became known.

His reign of terror took place between 1975 and 1980 and during that time, he killed 13 women and attempted to murder a further seven.

This is despite the fact he was interviewed by West Yorkshire Police nine times during the course of the five-year investigation.

Another viewer wrote on X: "Crikey me #TheLongShadow is a tough watch. I know in the main the police do an amazing job but bloomin heck they were shocking in this case."

Another added: "Watching #TheLongShadow on ITV, suddenly it struck me that while I was in my childhood bubble of fun, wonder and discovery that humanity is actually sick and disgusting. We deserve what we get, don’t we?"

The Long Shadow airs Mondays at 9pm on ITV1 and is available as a boxset on ITVX.
