Not very emu-sing! Pair of 6ft emus terrorise staff, pet owners and patients at vets’ surgery
- The giant birds appeared to self-refer to Edgewood Veterinary Group in Essex
A pair of 6ft tall emus have been ‘terrorising’ staff, pet owners and patients at a vets’ surgery in Essex, staff have said.
While the animals themselves might have found it emu-sing to walk into Edgewood Veterinary Group on Chelmsford Road in Purleigh, staff say the giant birds caused chaos.
Clients bringing in their beloved pets for treatment were seen nervously taking shelter in their cars as the emus stalked around the car park, angrily eyeing up anyone who dared to get too close.
The pair appeared to self-refer at the surgery near Maldon on Tuesday, but their appearance left staff and others baffled as to where they had come from.
They were safely rounded up and temporarily rehomed at Maldon Promenade Petting Zoo while attempts were made to track down their owner, with staff assuming they had managed to evade their owner and escape a private collection.

But they seem to have hit it off with the attraction’s current emu since their arrival, according to Nicola Watson, nurse manager at the vets.
However, where they came from remains a mystery.
‘It was quite a unique experience,’ Ms Watson said. ‘We had been going about our normal day and then these two birds come wandering through our car park.
‘They wandered out the back and then through our garden, and then went out to where all our clients are and were terrorising our poor clients in their cars.
‘We often have abandoned animals, that happens quite often unfortunately, but that was quite a unique experience. It does not usually happen like that.’
