Would YOU live above a Greggs? Three-bedroom flat goes up for sale above fast food outlet for £75,000 – meaning owner will never be more than 20ft away from a sausage roll

  • Dream home for superfans above outlet store in Gateshead, Tyne and Wear

A three-bedroom flat above a Greggs shop has gone on the market for £75,000 meaning the new owner will only be 20ft away from a sausage roll.

The dream home for superfans of the bakery chain sits above an outlet shop in Gateshead, Tyne and Wear, where items are sold for 75 per cent less than regular shops.

The person who snaps up the spacious chain-free flat will be in touching distance of being able to pick up a discounted bag of Greggs’ sausage rolls below in the Old Durham Road shop.

The flat is on an 968-year lease and is on offer via NGU Homesales. It currently has a tenant in situ, meaning it is a great investment opportunity.

A description on Rightmove reads: ‘Welcome to Old Durham Road. This property is a unique three-bedroom, one-bathroom upper flat house on Old Durham Road, Gateshead, NE8.

It would be a dream home for a superfan of the bakery chain as it would mean they would only be 20ft away from a sausage roll

‘This property enjoys a prime location with easy access to essential amenities as well as being only 15 minutes from Newcastle City Centre making it a desirable property for many tenants.

‘This property is chain-free, simplifying the buying process and ensuring a smoother transition into your new home.

‘This house is located close to transport links as well as being just 15 minutes from the city centre. You have close access to many local amenities such as a hospital, schools, shops, takeaways, and other everyday necessities.’

However, the listing doesn’t mention the proximity of the UK’s favourite bakery.

‘A wee basket on a string is all you need* one househunter mused.

‘You can eat like a fat king for £1 a day,’ said another. ‘That’s added 20k’ one added, while another replied: ‘That’s added 20lbs.’

The kitchen has a built in oven and looks quite spacious. The property is also close to a hospital, schools, shops and takeaways – although the listing doesn’t mention Greggs

The floor plan for the flat shows just how much room there is in the property with a living room, three bedrooms, kitchen, and hallway

‘Isn’t the point of living above a bakery to enjoy the smell of fresh baked goods?’ said one, but another wasn’t so sure.

‘I lived above a bakery in Paris,’ she said.

‘It was magical but also terrible for my waistline. In summer when I slept with the windows open the smell would start wafting into my room at 4.30am. I’d spend hours surrounded by the smell of fresh baked baguettes and pastries before I’d woken up.

‘I used to roll out of bed and go buy a croissant before I’d even made a coffee.’

In February Greggs fan Cory, from Barry, Wales, took his TikTok followers on a tour of the store after he was left speechless by the cheaper prices.

The Greggs enthusiast, who insisted he had not been paid by the bakery chain to promote the outlet, could not get over how cheap everything in the store was, from 55p doughnuts to £1.25 deal for two pastries.

That’s because the outlet sell the treats that didn’t sell in previous days at other stores. In comparison, the chain’s popular sausage roll retails at £1.15 a piece in the regular shops, when it is fresh.

The shop was filled with sandwiches, savoury and sweet treats, some costing less than £1.
